Helping the Poor in the 19th Century While Fighting for Immigrants, Saloons, and Contraception Instructor: Vincent Clark During the rise of American corporations after the Civil War, migrants flooded into the country, often forced to live in squalid tenements and work long hours with low pay in dangerous factories and mines. Reformers tried to help. But many feared immigration and tried to eliminate saloons, ban non-religious activities on Sunday, and prohibit contraception for the poor. William Rainsford, an Episcopal minister, turned his church into a center of help for the poor, but also welcomed immigrants, fought for saloons, championed allowing non-religious activities on Sunday, and supported spreading information about contraception among the poor. Rainsford's career thus illustrates the variety of social gospel and progressive reformers. His work for reform was prescient in avoiding repressive attempts to replace immigrants' values and behaviors by those supported by middle-class American Protestant culture.
