The Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy and Scholarship Awards Committee, along with the NAACP REPRESENTING OLATHE, OVERLAND PARK, AND LEAWOOD, KANSAS announces its’ sixteenth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy and Scholarship Awards Dinner. This is the largest Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in Johnson County.

This year’s Legacy Award recipient is Garmin. For decades, Garmin has pioneered the integration of GPS technology into wireless navigation devices and consumer wearables for people who live an active lifestyle. Founded in Olathe, Kansas, Garmin has grown to become a global, lifestyle brand with products serving five primary markets including automotive, aviation, fitness, marine, and outdoor recreation. Garmin employs more than 14,000 associates worldwide of which nearly 4,000 associates work in the Kansas City area. In 2019, Garmin ranked among the top five on Forbes list of America’s Best Large Employers and ranked as the No. 1 employer in the state of Kansas.

Garmin recognizes the importance of being involved in the communities where their associates live and work and has long supported the Greater Kansas City United Way and its partner agencies. This year’s theme is “Courageous Leadership.” The theme for this year was inspired by the following quote: “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles; Cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances. Courage breeds creativity; Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it. Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”

In addition to the Legacy Award, we are honoring individuals with our Diversity Advocate Awards to recognize people in specific fields who have shown leadership and distinction in promoting respect for diversity.

The public is invited to the 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration at MidAmerica Nazarene University will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020, at 9:30 a.m., at College Church of the Nazarene at 2020 E. Sheridan in Olathe. Each year at this event MNU presents its Martin Luther King Jr. Living Legacy Award. This year’s recipient is Olathe community leader and pastor of the Second Baptist Church, Dr. Bobby Love. In addition, MNU’s 2019-2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Leader Scholars will be recognized. MNU established this scholarship program for persons from diverse ethnicities who wish to emulate Dr. King’s passion for learning and servant leadership. MNU Leader Scholars maintain their scholarship award by demonstrating academic and leadership qualities during their university studies.

Mental health issues can be overwhelming to employers. This month, Nancy Spangler, PhD, will lead an important discussion about workplace mental health and provide employers with steps, tools and information to move toward greater action. She will identify the signs of depression and anxiety, and offer appropriate responses to make important workplace changes. Attendees will leave understanding common risk factors, strategies and available resources to help them respond effectively.

As always, HR Roundtable welcomes questions and input from members of the HR Roundtable council in attendance. If you have questions or first-hand experience around the topic of the month, we encourage you to attend and participate!

What is the HR Roundtable?

We offer a unique environment for human resources practitioners to explore related best practices, emerging trends, and workplace issues with their peers on a monthly basis.
Meeting registration opens two weeks prior to the event date and catered lunch registration ends the Friday before the meeting date. Complimentary Pepsi beverages are always available.
Payments for catered lunch are accepted online only. Cancelations must be received by 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to the event.
Space is limited to 30 people. A waiting list will be maintained as needed and individuals will be contacted if space becomes available.

Mission Statement:

The Olathe HR Roundtable offers human resource practitioners of member organizations a forum to discuss and share related best practices, emerging trends, and workplace issues. The main purpose of the roundtable is to create a unique environment where information can be shared in an open-exchange format that is collaborative, engaging, and valuable to represented organizations and the HR profession.

Who is it designed for?

The HR Roundtable was created as a networking and problem-solving opportunity for human resource practitioners who are directly involved in the personnel and hiring process of their organization (i.e. HR managers, recruiters, benefits specialists, payroll administrators, etc.). Small business owners and office managers often benefit from participating in these monthly meetings, as well.

Can vendors attend?

Due to limited space and because of the nature of the topics that are openly discussed by the HR practitioners, some attendance restrictions do apply. Thus it is crucial to the group’s success that attendance is restricted to "vendors" (identified as people who work in a "non-HR role") who provide uniquely human resources services and/or products.
Up to five seats will be reserved for vendors representing a relevant product or service may attend each meeting, with only one representative per business or organization each month.
Vendors are often seen as the “solutions experts” to the questions and concerns pertaining to the month's topic; therefore vendor input is welcome while “sales messages” are not. Vendors, along with all attendees, are encouraged to utilize the lunch and networking portion to meet others in the room.
To determine the appropriateness of vendors attending, Chamber staff will evaluate several factors, including their relevance to the employment situations that the HR practitioners face in their day-to-day jobs (i.e. vendors who provide payroll services, pre-employment testing, staffing assistance, training, benefits, etc.); training or unique qualifications directly relating to the topic of the month (i.e. college representative, benefits expert, employment law specialist, government agency, corporate consultant, etc.); and membership status.

Can non-members of the Olathe Chamber attend?

One representative of a non-member organization is welcome to attend one meeting a year.

Can vendors make presentations to the HR practitioners that attend?

Vendor-led discussions or presentations are at the sole discretion of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce staff.
This is a "no sales" environment in order to preserve the dialogue and integrity of the meetings.
